When John the Baptist saw the self righteous Jewish Clerics coming for the baptism he was offering, he angrily demands to know who warned them to flee from God’s coming wrath. He points out that the only way to find favour with God is to turn the whole of their life and everything they do towards God and away from the sinful habits that have been silently adopted, condoned and hidden in the religious practice and hierarchy.
At the time of the Great Flood, Noah was the one man who had a close relationship with God. But even then, God didn’t just save Noah. He made him build a massive ship! Cut timber work it, assemble it, waterproof it, fill it with provisions… And Noah did everything…
Genesis 6:11-14,17-19, 22 NLT
Now God saw that the earth had become corrupt and was filled with violence. God observed all this corruption in the world, for everyone on earth was corrupt. So God said to Noah, “I have decided to destroy all living creatures, for they have filled the earth with violence. Yes, I will wipe them all out along with the earth! “Build a large boat from cypress wood and waterproof it with tar, inside and out. Then construct decks and stalls throughout its interior. “Look! I am about to cover the earth with a flood that will destroy every living thing that breathes. Everything on earth will die. But I will confirm my covenant with you. So enter the boat—you and your wife and your sons and their wives. Bring a pair of every kind of animal—a male and a female—into the boat with you to keep them alive during the flood. So Noah did everything exactly as God had commanded him.
Matthew 3:7-10 NLT
But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming to watch him baptise, he denounced them. “You brood of snakes!” he exclaimed. “Who warned you to flee God’s coming wrath? Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God. Don’t just say to each other, ‘We’re safe, for we are descendants of Abraham.’ That means nothing, for I tell you, God can create children of Abraham from these very stones. Even now the ax of God’s judgment is poised, ready to sever the roots of the trees. Yes, every tree that does not produce good fruit will be chopped down and thrown into the fire.
If we want to walk with God then we must do as he asks us. We must build our own ships. Faith is the ship that will keep us afloat in any storm and carry us over any flood in life. But faith doesn’t come ready made, we have to build it piece by piece, slowly, steadily, working it out as we go along. But there is an instruction manual and there are others we can ask who are much farther along with building theirs….
I just want to keep steadily building my faith.
