It seems to me, having read the passage from Matthew below, that there are four phases that need to passed through before the return of Christ and the end of the world.
These phases are all things that have already occurred in history and in most places in the planet.
-1st, we have nations going to war against nations and kingdoms against kingdoms.
-2nd, we have great natural disasters.
-3rd, we have widespread persecution of Jesus’s followers.
-4th, we have the Good News about the kingdom preached throughout the whole world.
Now the only thing in this list that I haven’t seen much of in my life time or my part of the world is great persecution of Christians, whereby they are in danger of arrest and death. But it has happened here, and it is happening in other places today.
Matthew 24:3-14 NLT
Later, Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives. His disciples came to him privately and said, “Tell us, when will all this happen? What sign will signal your return and the end of the world? ” Jesus told them, “Don’t let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah.’ They will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don’t panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won’t follow immediately. Nation will go to war against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in many parts of the world. But all this is only the first of the birth pains, with more to come. “Then you will be arrested, persecuted, and killed. You will be hated all over the world because you are my followers. And many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other. And many false prophets will appear and will deceive many people. Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, so that all nations will hear it; and then the end will come.
There is plenty of hatred to be seen in our society, sin is rampant and the love of many has grown cold. People are looking to all sorts of things for spiritual fulfilment, many of which will only lead them into further misery and maybe worse. I pray that having heard the truth, I might stay true to it and I might endure when it might be so easy to turn away and betray my faith. I also pray that I might play some small part by sharing the word of God and the Good News of His Kingdom.
