In the small passage below are the last words King David spoke, on his death bed, to his son Solomon. These are the words of the man known as, a man after God’s own heart. These were the things David wanted to tell his son, King Solomon, the wisest ruler in the whole history of Israel. The message is simple: know the instructions and laws of God as recorded by Moses in the Law, and then live by them. If you do this then you will be successful in all you do and the Lord will honour the promises he made to your ancestors. This advice from father to son – from one King to the next, is still valid. Each one of us should think on these final words of advice and wisdom from David to his son. Solomon is still famous for his wealth and his wisdom, all these thousands of years later.
1 Kings 2:1-4 NLT
As the time of David’s death approached, he gave this charge to his son Solomon:
“I am going where everyone on earth must someday go. Take courage and be a man. Observe the requirements of the Lord your God, and follow all his ways. Keep the decrees, commands, regulations and laws written in the Law of Moses so that you will be successful in all you do and wherever you go. If you do this, then the Lord will keep his promise he made to me. He told me,’If your descendants live as they should and follow me faithfully with all their heart and soul, one of them will always sit on the throne of Israel.
I have spoken of my admiration for David a few times in recent weeks. But here we see all of David’s wisdom and his lifetime’s faith in the truth of God’s power and love, distilled into a few lines. Here we see the simplest of truths. If you read and obey the word of the Lord, he will make good on all his promises and you will know success and abundance in all that you do, wherever you may go. My goal is to listen to David’s last words to his son. Solomon listened and he was so richly blessed that he is still talked about to this day! Another of David’s descendants followed the Lord so faithfully and with all his heart and soul, that eventually he allowed himself to be crucified as a perfect sacrifice, in order to pay the full and final price of all the sin of mankind. And so, I follow my Lord Jesus Christ as he sits, always and forever, on the throne of Israel.
