Today’s passage makes two points that I can’t ignore. The first is that Gods route of escape for Israelites from Egypt was completely unforeseen. It was crazy, ridiculous even.
The second is that, crazy as it was, this unforeseeable road through the sea was only available to those with the faith to take it when it was there. It was a road though the sea to salvation through faith. It was not, and is not open to those who can not imagine the truth of the Lord. It is not open, and remains closed, to those who do not know it could even be there for them. This impossible road through the sea is not available to the intellectuals and scientific champions, who are so afraid of God and all his mystery, that they seek to humiliate those who know Him. Just because they don’t know about, and can’t scientifically prove God’s pathway, doesn’t mean it wasn’t really there! All they really do is prove the paucity of their thinking, the narrowness of the scientific process and show up science’s inability to provide for the full intellectual and spiritual needs of mankind as we are today.
Psalms 77:16-20 NLT
16 When the Red Sea saw you, O God, its waters looked and trembled!
The sea quaked to its very depths.
17 The clouds poured down rain; the thunder rumbled in the sky.
Your arrows of lightning flashed.
18 Your thunder roared from the whirlwind; the lightning lit up the world!
The earth trembled and shook.
19 Your road led through the sea, your pathway through the mighty waters—
a pathway no one knew was there!
20 You led your people along that road like a flock of sheep,
with Moses and Aaron as their shepherds.
I am fascinated by the prevalence of the idea that it must be either scientific reason or God. God is so clearly, so much more massive than us, that it is ludicrous to think that science and reason (in the Richard Dawkins sense) could ever give us insight into very much more than workings of our planet as an organic environment. How can any reasonable person base the entirety of his or her existence, purely on the scientific evidence? It is clear to me that faith is a mystery to many clever, scientifically minded people. But just because their views dominate in the media these days doesn’t mean to say that men and women of faith are idiots. Far from it, we are able to access paths and roads in life that others could never even imagine, let alone prove! My goal today is to have the faith to step out upon the pathway that nobody knows is there yet.
